Mat Sabu arrested over alleged Bukit Kepong PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu has been arrested by police in connection with his alleged remarks on the Bukit Kepong incident. Mohamad, or Mat Sabu, had voluntarily gone to the state police headquarters at 8.30pm before he was detained. He was released on bail at 9.05pm. Mat Sabu is expected to be charged for criminal defamation under Section 500 of the Penal Code on Wednesday. The political stalwart, popularly known as Mat Sabu, was driven to the state Police headquarters under escort at about 8.40pm after arriving by flight at the Penang International Airport, following a warrant that had been served on him earlier in the day. However, he was released on bail later. He is scheduled to be charged at the Butterworth Sessions court under section 500 of the Penal Code tomorrow for allegedly making a statement liable to lead to public mischief during a ceramah in Tasek Gelugor on August 21. Penang Police Chief Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakub said due process will be followed in the case which involves criminal defamation. The offence carries a jail sentence for a maximum of two years, or a fine, or a combination of both, upon conviction. Ayub said more than 1,000 police reports have been lodged across the country since Mohamad was reported to have made the comments at the ceramah. “Many ex-policemen, and descendants and relatives of the victims of Bukit Kepong have lodged reports and complaints with regards to his statement,” Ayub said. He said Mohamad was alleged to have defamed the victims who were believed by many people to have sacrificed and struggled for the country. “What he said may denigrate the good names of these people,” he said. “With the current effort, we hope the case can be resolved.” Mat Sabu arrested over alleged Bukit Kepong
