Singapore lose again this time with Iraq
Singapore 0 – Iraq 2 (Asia World Cup Qualifying, September 6, 2011)
Singapore suffered
its second successive defeat in the World Cup qualifier third round
match at the Jalan Besar stadium on Tuesday evening. Singapore lost 0-2
against Iraq, after its 1-2 defeat against China last Friday.
Both teams needed to win after losing their opening encounters last week.
Newly-elected Singapore President, Tony Tan Keng Yam, was among the 6,000 sell-out crowd rooting for a Singapore victory.
Despite
complaining about the artificial pitch, the Iraqis had more possession
and chances at the Singapore goal. But they could not make it count,
with the first-half ending goalless.
Five minutes after the restart, the Iraqis were one up, with Ala'a Abdulzehra heading into the back of the net.
Singapore's
best chance fell to Shahril Ishak in the 64th minute. But the Iraqis
went on to seal the match with a goal by Younis Mahmood at the 86th
minute.
Singapore plays Jordan next at the same venue on October 11.
